Clever San Francisco, CA

Educational publishing has a lot of diverse actors, including textbook publishers and makers of record keeping and curriculum software, and now makers of tablets and apps. Clever has developed a way all of those players to agree to deliver data from a single cloud-based source. The different vendors pay Clever, and Clever offers the service to schools for free. Clever improves class management by enabling teachers to enroll and track students, normally a time-consuming process. Using a so-called “single sign on” process, students can access online resources from different vendors, and teachers can easily log performance among different classes and locations.

Duolingo Pittsburgh, PA

Free language education for the world. Learning languages in Duolingo is completely free – now and forever – with no ads or hidden fees. Wondering how that can be? It’s because you create value by translating real-world documents while you’re learning. Here’s how it works: Somebody who needs a webpage translated uploads it to Duolingo. That document then gets presented to Duolingo students who can translate it in order to practice the language they are learning. When the document is fully translated, Duolingo returns it to the original content owner who, depending on the type of document they uploaded, pays for the translation.
